Did you know that hearing loss is America’s leading birth defect?  In the U.S. alone, at least 12,000 babies are born each year with some degree of hearing loss; 90% of these births are to hearing parents. 

Think it can’t happen to you or someone you know and love?  Think again:  Our daughter is one of those statistics.  Born on June 30, 2003, Michela was diagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss in both ears.  When we heard the news that she would possibly never hear, our world came crashing down.  After several months with hearing aid technology and no benefit, we began our journey with the Cochlear Implant.  Through the rigorous testing and doctors appointments, Michela was approved to receive this device.  In August 2004, she was surgically implanted with the implant and in September 2004, her device was activated.  In preparing for this journey, the doctors told us they were not sure if she would benefit from this technology given the extent of her damage.  Beating all odds three years later, Michela is doing fantastically with her device.  Through dedication, support and constant teaching Michela is making great strides.

So, this year, we’re going to do something to give back; paying forward if you will.  We are organizing and participating The First Annual Live, Love, Hear Benefit Run/Walk.  The walk will be held on October 5^th at 10am at Thun Trail, Reading, PA.  The funds raised will go to the Cochlear Implant Awareness Foundation to aid in providing information, resources, and support to prospective cochlear implant recipients and their families
